Castleton in North Yorkshire
Castleton village is situated in the upper Esk valley in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This picturesque village boasts stunning views in all directions. The surrounding moorland is famous for the purple heather in August and grouse and pheasant shooting.
Castleton is an ideal base for visitors with shops, post office, two pubs, tea room, garage, church and a bank. The area is perfect for walking and sightseeing, fishing and bird watching, all making for a very enjoyable stay. The station in the lower part of the village next to the river Esk will take you by train through the villages and country side of the Esk vally down to Whitby or up the valley and on to Middlesbrough. The North Yorkshire Moors National Park Centre is located near the next village of Danby. It is said that the village was named after a castle built in the vicinity on the banks of the River Esk by Robert de Brus.
The Eskdale Inn www.eskdaleinn.co.uk run by the same family is situated near the railway station, serves good home cooked food and is open 7 days a week 12 to 11 pm. Food is served every day 12 noon to 8 pm.
